Steve Walters: A True American Patriot Committed to Melbourne Beach
September 16, 2025
Steve Walters has been a steady and reliable voice for the people of Melbourne Beach. A 25-year resident, Vietnam Veteran, father of two with 4 grandchildren,
Steve has devoted his life to serving his community. Whether as Police Chief, Mayor, Commissioner, or simply a private citizen attending Town meetings, Steve has always put the people of Melbourne Beach first.
Steve’s love of country and community is evident in everything he does. With his bachelors in Public Administration, dual Master’s in Management and Human Resources, and years of hands-on leadership, he understands that good governance requires both vision and humility. That belief has shaped his approach as a public servant; always trusting the people of Melbourne Beach to make the final call on important issues. As Steve puts it, “I would never be so arrogant to think a commission can make better decisions than the residents. That’s why I always support citizen referendums on important issues.”
He stood shoulder to shoulder with citizens when they voted in the referendum to “Fight the Height,” successfully keeping building heights at 28 feet instead of 35. He was instrumental in sponsoring the referendum that gave residents the right—not commissioners—to decide the outcome of zoning changes. Steve also sponsored the referendum for Town Commissioner term limits, which was passed by residents.
Throughout his career, Steve has worked tirelessly to preserve the charm, beauty, and quality of life that make Melbourne Beach so special. He has consistently opposed short-term rentals, recognizing that strong, stable family-oriented neighborhoods are the foundation of a healthy community—where children thrive, friendships grow, and our coastal way of life is preserved for generations to come. He also spoke out against unnecessary stop signs in town, standing up for practical, common-sense solutions instead of wasteful self-serving measures.
Steve also knows that leadership is about solving problems head-on. He is determined to renew the Town’s focus on tackling flooding issues with thoughtful planning and long-term solutions. As a commissioner, Steve voted for and secured millions of dollars in federal grants to fund storm water repairs—critical progress for a coastal town facing ongoing flooding concerns.
Known as a fiscal hawk, Steve has always looked for ways to cut waste and save residents money. He sponsored the policy of no building permit fees for hurricane damage, helping families recover quickly without added financial burdens. Following hurricanes, Steve also served as the Town’s liaison with FEMA, personally assuring that hundreds of meals were received and distributed to residents in need. With Steve, transparency and honesty are not just promises—they are the way he has consistently conducted himself. You will always know exactly where you stand with Steve.
Steve’s record of service speaks for itself. As Police Chief, he was a true hands-on leader, patrolling the streets, protecting residents, and even guarding the crosswalks at Gemini in the morning. And when developers pushed for a 7-Eleven, Steve fought for the community and helped secure the wonderful library that residents enjoy today.
Steve Walters will always do what is right for Melbourne Beach. He has never shied away from tough decisions, and his guiding principle has always been simple—protect the town, serve the people, and honor the values that make Melbourne Beach a place worth calling home.
With Steve Walters, residents can count on a leader who is deeply rooted in faith, family, service, and country. He is a patriot in every sense of the word, and his lifelong dedication to Melbourne Beach is proof that his only agenda is to safeguard the future of the community he loves so dearly.
